Choosing thickness, type and quantity
- Thickness: 1 to 2 mm for thin washers and lining, 3 mm for most gaskets, 5 to 6 mm for uneven surfaces, 6 to 10 mm for pads and flooring, and 12 to 25 mm for heavy-duty pads.
- Plain or cloth insertion: plain sheet suits most gaskets and pads. Cloth insertion sheet has fabric layers inside that stop it stretching, for high-pressure gaskets, flap valves and linings.
- Roll sizes: 1.2 m × 10 m (4 × 33 ft) for neoprene, SBR, nitrile and EPDM, 1 m × 10 m (3.3 × 33 ft) for silicone and silicone foam, and 1.5 m × 15 m (5 × 50 ft) for EVA foam.
- Weight: solid rubber sheet weighs about 1.3 to 1.5 kg per m² for each 1 mm of thickness, so a 1.2 m × 10 m roll of 3 mm sheet weighs about 50 to 54 kg.

Which rubber sheet is best for gaskets?
It depends on what the gasket seals. For water and air, use SBR or EPDM. For oil, petrol and diesel, use nitrile. For hot water and steam, use EPDM. For high heat or food contact, use silicone. For a general all-round gasket, use neoprene. 3 mm is the most common gasket thickness.
What is the difference between neoprene, nitrile, EPDM and SBR?
Neoprene is the all-rounder, with good oil and weather resistance. Nitrile is the best for oil and fuel. EPDM is the best for sun, hot water and steam, but not oil. SBR is the economical choice for flooring, mats and general use. The comparison table above shows them side by side.
Which rubber sheet is oil resistant?
Nitrile (NBR) rubber sheet has excellent resistance to petrol, diesel, hydraulic oil and grease. Neoprene has good oil resistance. SBR and EPDM are not oil resistant and swell when they touch oil.
Which rubber sheet is best for outdoor use?
EPDM is the best for long outdoor use, as it resists sun, UV and ozone. Silicone is also excellent outdoors, and neoprene is good. SBR and nitrile crack over time in strong sun.
What is cloth insertion rubber sheet?
Cloth insertion rubber sheet has one or more layers of fabric built inside the rubber. The fabric stops the sheet stretching and makes it much stronger, so it is used for high-pressure flange gaskets, flap valves, diaphragms and linings.
